Hafta 512: Delhi’s air pollution, Adani indictment in US

The podcast where we discuss the news of the week.

This week, Newslaundry’s Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande, Jayashree Arunachalam, and Raman Kirpal are joined by environment and air pollution expert Sunil Dahiya.

Abhinandan remarks that “the most important news of the week is the north Indian smog”. He raises the question of why the situation has worsened and whether farm fires are significant contributors.

Sunil says, “This is nothing new. If we talk about the last decade, it was around 2014-15 when WHO came up with a report that highlighted Delhi as the most polluted capital. That was the same year Delhi experienced severe pollution, similar to what is happening now. Now we cannot control the meteorology, wind speed, or wind direction. What we can do is, change the emission.”

He further explains that stubble burning significantly contributes to pollution, but it is not the only cause. He said stubble burning has been on the decline, but the air quality has remained poor.

The panel also discussed about businessman Gautam Adani’s indictment in the US over alleged bribery linked to solar energy contracts in India.

This and a lot more. Tune in!
