Explained: UP’s ‘love jihad’ law
In November last year, the Adityanath government brought an ordinance criminalising religious conversion for the purpose of marriage. But the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance of 2020, infamously known as the “love jihad” law, is essentially being employed as a blunt tool to punish Muslim men, as Newslaundry has found reporting on its implementation on the ground.
