Three cheers to students who wrote for the series despite facing pressure from their college administrations.
Our Campus Politik series on the state of sexual harassment redressal mechanism in colleges has won us our second Laadli Media and Advertising Award For Gender Sensitivity 2017 as Best Web Campaign (English – Northern Region).
This series covered over 20 colleges across the country and looked at the state of the UGC-mandated Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) in colleges. ICC is a body to check sexual harassment in colleges but are students aware of it and the process to make a complaint? How effective have college ICCs been in processing complaints in the past?
This series helped students understand the functioning of the redressal mechanism in their colleges and question the administration in cases where there was a complete absence of an ICC or where it existed merely on paper.
While the certificate was awarded to Newslaundry, it’s really the students who have won this award. Especially, since a lot of them had to face pressure from their college administration to not report the dismal state of their respective ICCs. A big shout-out to our former Campus Editor, Sahla Nechiyil, as well. She edited the pieces and encouraged students across colleges to come out with their stories.
This is the ninth edition of the award that “honours, recognises and celebrates the efforts of those in media and advertising who highlight pressing gender concerns”. Population First, the organisation behind the award received around 1,500 entries from across the country for a total of 96 categories.
