Kunal Kamra on the potential of comedy as a tool for political criticism, the Indian comedy space and much more.
Abhinandan Sekhri talks to stand-up comic Kunal Kamra about the Indian comedy space, political satire and more. Kamra hosts Shut Up Ya Kunal, a show where he interviews journalists, activists, politicians and a host of other personalities.
Abhinandan asks Kamra about the impact of his subject choices on his career. Kamra says although his genre of comedy isn’t the most popular, he continues to do what he does to hold power to account.
Kamra is of the view that the life you lead and the stuff you consume is the work you create. He relies on news for his content. Kamra also talks about his “Don’t vote for Modi” campaign and dislike for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He says, “When criticising the Prime Minister, we should be as bizarre and vague…like say things like don’t vote for him without giving any other leads as to what to do.”
Kamra also discusses the Indian comedy audience’s nature, the psychological disposition of the comic, his mantra when it comes to making enemies, and a whole lot more.
