To no one’s surprise, the country today woke up to the news of gangster Vikas Dubey’s “encounter”, a euphemism for custodial killing. According to the Uttar Pradesh police, Dubey tried to flee with a weapon while he was being brought to Kanpur from Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain. The police claim that when one of the cars in the convoy bringing back Dubey overturned, he tried to snatch a police weapon, compelling the police to shoot him.

Interestingly, reporters who were tailing the police convoy have said they were stopped at a check point in Kanpur before Dubey was killed.

Mirror Now reported that the vehicles carrying mediapersons were stopped just meters away from the encounter site.

According to a report in Aaj Tak, the media vehicles were stopped before the encounter. The report noted that the police convoy went ahead after the media vehicles were stopped, and the accident and the “encounter” happened shortly after. Aaj Tak's was one of the vehicles following the convoy.

The Indian Express also reported that the media convoy was stopped by the police in Kanpur.
