Noah said India's government 'took their eyes off the ball'.
"You know things are getting mad when a leader's response to criticism of his failures is to try and shut down the criticism, not the failures."
This is how television host and political commentator described prime minister Narendra Modi's handling of India's Covid crisis on a segment of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah uploaded today. Noah minced no words in highlighting "India's tsunami of Covid" and the abject failure of the government.
“The really sad part about this crisis is that it could have been avoided if India’s government hadn’t taken their eye off the ball,” said Noah, citing India's shortage of resources and the collapse of hospitals.
He also called out Modi for holding election rallies while Covid cases soared, saying, "In recent months, even as cases rose, prime minister Narendra Modi hosted huge political rallies, flouted social distancing, and allowed mass gatherings." His segment included clips from CNN and ABC on the underreporting of deaths, how thousands were tweeting the hashtag #ResignModi and #SuperSpreaderModi, and how the US had "grudgingly stepped up" to help.
