India saw a drop in the Global Hunger Index as it was placed at 101 out of 119 countries, after it placed at 94 out of 107 countries in 2020. According to UN reports, India is home to a quarter of all undernourished people worldwide. That’s right, one in four hungry people across the world is an Indian.
On top of it, we have the highest number of wasted children worldwide. The situation is bad, to put it mildly, and the pandemic has made things worse.
To address our massive hunger problem, the government launched a pandemic special, the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, a massive undertaking to feed 80 crore people for free. On paper, it's a much-needed scheme but when it comes to implementation, there were major failures.
In this episode, we look at what the Modi government is doing to solve our massive hunger problem and the issues with food security-related schemes. Plus, we take a look at Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu, an MP from Andhra Pradesh who has been making news.
