Sedition, the grandfather of all draconian laws and a gift of colonial British rulers to India, might just see its demise soon. The Supreme Court last week stayed the application of the sedition law until the central government "reexamines and reconsiders" its provisions. Meanwhile, all trials in sedition cases will be "kept in abeyance".
This is a good time to see how this law has thrived in India for 152 years and offer up a preemptive obituary. Yes, yes, call us optimists.
