The BJP government tomtoms its welfare schemes but many women say they haven’t received the benefits.
Working in the onion fields around Mathana village of Haryana’s Kurukshetra district, many women labourers say they don’t know who their Lok Sabha poll candidates are. For them, all that matters is how they will be able to earn enough wages to ensure their children don’t sleep on an empty stomach.
What bothers them are rising prices and their husbands spending all their savings on liquor. They also claim they haven’t got the benefits of most welfare schemes launched by the Narendra Modi government, from those linked to subsidised housing to cooking gas.
“Inflation is very high. The family is managing somehow. Sometimes my husband goes hungry,” says Somana.
Soni Devi, meanwhile, complains of hunger. “Five kilograms of ration is available..but who will eat millet in this heat?”
