The TDP wants the candidate to be decided by the NDA partners.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has secured his post for the third time, with the support of the NDA allies. His ministers have taken the oath, and now all eyes are on who will be the next Lok Sabha speaker.
The coveted job is likely to be eyed by the NDA’s two key allies – the Janata Dal United and Telugu Desam Party. The TDP has said the candidate should be decided by the NDA partners. But the JDU has reposed faith in any candidate chosen by the BJP. The Opposition INDIA bloc, meanwhile, has said it will support the TDP’s choice. But why is it that every party in power wants its own MP in the speaker seat?
The speaker is not only responsible for conducting parliamentary sessions but also takes decisions on disqualification under the 10th schedule, popularly known as the anti-defection law.
