Hafta 498: Hindenburg report, Kolkata murder and rape case

The podcast where we discuss the news of the week.

This week, Newslaundry’s Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande, Raman Kirpal, and Anand Vardhan are joined by award-winning business journalist and author Sucheta Dalal.

On the latest Hindenburg Research report that claims SEBI chief Madhabi Puri Buch and her husband invested in REITs linked to Gautam Adani’s brother, Vinod Adani, Sucheta says this damages the market regulator’s reputation. She says, “At that level, when you realise that you have invested in a fund that is being investigated, you should’ve gone to the Board, or to the finance ministry”, asking if she should be recused.

Abhinandan delves into his experiences with tax authorities, and an instance where he had to prove the identity of Newslaundry’s editor-in-chief, Raman Kirpal.

The panel then discusses the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. Manisha says, “In some cases, journalists give out gory details to jolt people or to make a news newsworthy in a country where rape cases are so common.”

Raman talks about how the media has politicised the case, while Anand discusses the rural vs urban space factor that impacts how rape cases are reported.

This and a lot more. Tune in!
