Kalpana, wife of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, is contesting from Gandey assembly seat in Jharkhand’s Giridih.
JMM’s Kalpana Soren made a parachute entry into politics in January, after her husband and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren was arrested in a corruption case. In a short span, Kalpana has emerged as a prominent face of the party and the INDIA alliance.
She won the by-election in Gandey, a JMM stronghold in Giridih district, earlier this year and is now contesting the seat again against the BJP’s Munia Devi.
Kalpana’s leadership in Hemant’s absence, poll campaign, and vocal stance on issues have kept her in headlines. In this conversation with Newslaundry, she spoke about the elections, her role within the party, alliance dynamics, fallout with Champai Soren, and the BJP’s accusations over “Bangladeshi infiltrators”.
