Jyoti is fighting her maiden election, while her family has represented the Dharavi constituency for decades.
One of the most intensely discussed issues this election season in Maharashtra is the Dharavi redevelopment project. The Maha Vikas Aghadi has accused the BJP of “selling Dharavi to Gautam Adani,” whose group won the tender for the slum area’s redevelopment.
In a conversation with Newslaundry, Congress’s Dharavi candidate Jyoti Gaikwad, who is contesting her maiden election, spoke about her political legacy, the main concerns connected to the Adani project, and her party’s failure to deliver the redevelopment promise.
Dharavi has been represented by Jyoti’s father Eknath Gaikwad and sister and Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad for decades. She also addressed the BJP’s accusations of the Congress enforcing dynasty politics and the weight of carrying forward the legacy of a political family.
