The literati, it’s clear by now, are aggrieved with the Modi government. In the last few weeks, three popular writers – first Uday Prakash, then Nayantara Sahgal and Ashok Vajpeyi – had returned their Sahikya Akademi awards; the latest is Urdu novelist Rahman Abbas. On October 8, Hindi writer Giriraj Kishore also released a statement saying the “colour of the Akademi” should be preserved, and that the Akademi should “not allow it to be saffronised”.
