Hathras: Telegraph, Dainik Jagran, BuzzFeed get court notice for revealing rape victim’s identity

The Delhi High Court on Friday issued a notice to several news and social media platforms for allegedly disclosing the identity of the Dalit girl who was gangraped and murdered by four upper caste Thakur men in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, four months ago, ANI reported.

The notice came on a Public Interest Litigation that sought action against the Telegraph, Dainik Jagran, BuzzFeed, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and WikiFeed for violating Section 228A of the Indian Penal Code.

The plea asked that the Delhi police register an FIR against these platforms and ensure they withdraw any published material that violates the right to privacy of the victim.

The petition “lists out the alleged violations by the publications named by it” that have not been rectified until the date of filing of the PIL, Live Law reported.

The matter is listed for hearing on February 5.
