No varsity in Nuh despite locals’ demand, govt proposal, 7 years of Aspirational Districts Programme

In 2018, the Niti Aayog identified Haryana’s Nuh as one of the most backward districts in the country and added it to the Aspirational Districts Programme. But seven years on, little has changed in the district’s economy and educational infrastructure.  

There are no universities in Nuh or Mewat, despite the locals’ longstanding demand. In 2021, when Ferozepur Jhirka Congress MLA Maman Khan questioned the government about its proposal to set up a state university in Nuh, the then state education minister Kanwar Pal said the government is searching for land. In March last year, when Sohna BJP MLA Sanjay Singh raised the same question, higher education minister Moolchand Sharma said the proposal was “under consideration”. 

Locals told Newslaundry that the “main issue” is lack of education and the Muslim-dominated region has been neglected. “This is the only Muslim area in Haryana. That is why development work does not happen here.”

In the upcoming assembly polls, Congress has fielded incumbent MLA Maman Khan from Ferozepur Jhirka against BJP’s Naseem Ahmed, who lost the polls in 2019. Ahmed has been a two-time MLA from the constituency with an INLD ticket.
