‘They would’ve set my kids on fire’: Mapping the trail of destruction in Bahraich
Shops shut, vehicles and homes charred, and streets wearing a deserted look. That’s how areas affected by communal violence in UP’s Bahraich looked when Newslaundry visited ground zero to take stock of the situation.
The police have so far detained over 30 people while internet services are restricted, a heavy security deployment is in place, and curbs on movement remain in place.
We spoke to families whose homes have been burnt, those who have taken shelter in police stations, and relatives of the deceased, Ram Gopal Mishra, to understand what triggered the violence and the official response to it.
